Porcelain Veneers at Rowan Family Dentistry

What are Veneers?

A dental veneer is a thin shell of composite resin or porcelain that is custom made to fit over a tooth, restoring its natural look. They are also used to repair teeth that are stained, discolored, worn down, chipped, uneven, misaligned or abnormally spaced. Veneers also provide strength and durability like natural tooth enamel, and it is difficult to stain a veneer. We design each one to fit the contour of the tooth; it is meant to augment and bond it to the enamel of the tooth via a series of in-office procedures.

Veneers are also available for cosmetic purposes for those who want to brighten their teeth. They offer a swift way to a beautiful smile, and this treatment works amazingly well for people with teeth with chips, stains or gaps. However, keep in mind that veneer treatment is permanent, so it’s important to thoroughly understand the procedure and how to care for the veneers afterward. your dentist at Rowan Family Dentistry will explain everything clearly during your consultation.

What Happens During a Veneer Procedure?

The procedure generally takes one or two appointments. If we prefabricate the veneer, it will often take only one appointment, but if the laboratory has to create the veneer, it will take two appointments. We usually don’t need local anesthesia during veneer placement, but we can employ it depending on the patient’s needs.

During the veneer procedure, your dentist at Rowan Family Dentistry will first clean the tooth and decide what the correct shade is for the veneer. Next, he will take a small piece off the surface of the tooth to make room for the veneer. Then he’ll take in impression of the tooth and send it the dental laboratory. We then create the dental veneer to fit your tooth and mouth. In the meantime, we’ll place a temporary veneer on your tooth.

Once we receive the porcelain veneer, we’ll remove the temporary one and thoroughly clean your tooth with water and pumice. We also wash the veneer and let it air dry. The final step is to bind the veneer to your tooth using resin cement. your dentist at Rowan Family Dentistry will remove any excess adhesive and polish the margins. He may schedule a follow-up appointment to check how comfortable it is.

How Do I Care for My Veneers?

You can brush and floss your veneers just like your regular teeth. Brush and floss your teeth daily using non-abrasive toothpaste. We also suggest limiting your intake of foods and drinks that cause stains, such as coffee.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

Conventional porcelain is the material most often used for veneers. Porcelain veneers are known for their ability to correct issues of color or shape and can last for up to 20 years.

Proper oral hygiene will prolong the longevity of your veneers. However, no matter how well you care for them, we will eventually need to replace them at some point. Don’t worry; we’ll help you every step of that procedure as well.
